A convicted prowler who was able to sneak his way out of the DeKalb County jail Wednesday was quickly recaptured, authorities said.

Michael David Cavalier was waiting to be transferred to the Gwinnett County Detention Center when he discovered a way to get away, DeKalb County sheriff's officials said.

With the help of a pair of fellow inmates covering his escape around 3 p.m., Cavalier, 24, crept along the floor and through the open door of the inmate release area.

Other inmates saw Cavalier scramble to freedom and alerted jail officials, DeKalb County sheriff's office spokeswoman Mikki Jones said.

He was caught sometime after 4:30 p.m., she said.

"Deputies set up surveillance at a certain location and eventually arrested him at 7610 Watson Bay Court in Stone Mountain," Jones said.

They saw Cavalier leaving a home in the 6100 block of Swabia Lane and driving away in a car that pulled up to the address, authorities said. The car was later stopped on Watson Bay Court in Lithonia, Jones said.

In addition to the prowling, giving false statements and driving an unregistered vehicle charges Cavalier had in DeKalb, he now likely will face an escape charge.

Probation violation charges still await Cavalier in Gwinnett, where he'd been convicted of burglary.
