‘Project Popsicle’ to cost Atlanta $500K for GE Digital
A $500,000 bill is coming due for “Project Popsicle,” the code name of the successful economic development effort to convince General Electric to open in Atlanta its first Digital Operations Center.
The City Council has approved an ordinance authorizing the Invest Atlanta grant to GE.
The city says the payoff, besides 250 technology jobs with salaries exceeding $100,000 a year, includes a $3 million investment by GE Digital in its offices here – it’s looking for space in Midtown, officials say – $334,000 a year in new tax revenues for Atlanta, and an economic impact estimated at $48.6 million.
The newly created jobs will include system administration, full-stack operations, and engineering and service desk professionals, according to the city’s June 9 announcement of the center.
