The Cherokee County Zoning Board of Appeals has scheduled a special called meeting to discuss a private school’s request for street access to Bailey Road near unincorporated Hickory Flat.
Anchor Christian Academy’s request for a variance allowing the school’s main entrance at Hickory Flat Church of God, 947 Bailey Road, is the topic of the meeting set for 6:30 p.m. July 20 at the county administration building, 1130 Bluffs Parkway, Canton.
The school, now at 6613 Hickory Flat Highway, Canton, seeks to partially occupy the church building, but the county zoning ordinance does not allow an entrance to a private or parochial school off Bailey.
According to a letter to the zoning appeals board from school trustee Alan Miller, the church has been in this location since 1975 and at one time may have had an attendance close to 300 and activities almost every day of the week, and the school would not produce “anywhere near that volume of traffic.”
Anchor just completed its second academic year, Miller said. It offers classes from pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade, plans to add a grade each year to eventually offer classes through 12th grade, and currently enrolls about 70 students.
