DeKalb County had scattered power outages by midday Wednesday and 10 roads shut down from the ice and downed lines, but there were no “cataclysmic” events since most people were staying home as asked.
That allowed road crews to treat nearly all of the county’s main roadways, said county spokesman Burke Brennan.
“Ever since this started, we have not stopped,” Brennan said of police and public works teams patrolling the county.
A brine and sand mix was being thrown first on roads around police and fire stations and hospitals. However, Houston Mill Road near Emory Hospital was among the roadways closed due to ice. Officials continue to ask residents to stay off the roads except in emergencies, since even with treatment, roads remain slick and dangerous.
Other roads shut down included Perimeter Center Parkway and Dunwoody Club Drive in north DeKalb, Eastside Road at Wesley Chapel Road and Panthersville Road in south DeKalb. Teams were also working a crash that shut down Clairmont Road, a major north-south connector, at North Peachtree Road.
Despite the problems, no residents had taken up the county’s offer of warming stations at the Tucker Recreation Center on LaVista Road, the Gresham Park Recreation Center on Gresham Ave. in Atlanta and the county jail on Memorial Drive.
Brennan said those stations will remain open as the second wave of the storm comes in this evening. Officials expect more use of the centers if residents are without power this evening.
“We are keeping tabs on everything,” Brennan said.
