Powder Springs Councilman Al Thurman announced his candidacy for mayor through the filing of his Jan. 31 campaign disclosure form, which The Atlanta Journal-Constitution obtained Tuesday afternoon through a Georgia Open Records request of City Clerk Kelly Axt.

Byron Merritt is Thurman’s campaign committee chairperson, and Tameeka Thurman is his campaign committee treasurer.

Owner of Superior Landscaping and Lawn Service, Thurman has had $3,063 in contributions and $1,616 in expenditures, leaving him a balance of $1,447.

His major contributions are $1,000 on Nov. 30, then $1,400 on Dec. 10 - both from real estate broker Charles Mixon of Mixon Properties and a $600 loan from himself.

Thurman’s largest expenditure was $1,500 to Lance Jones, senior strategist of Lance T. Jones and Associates in Atlanta, for campaign consulting.

Mayor Patricia C. Vaughn, seeking her fourth term of four years, filed no contributions on her Jan. 31 campaign disclosure form and listed no campaign committee.
