A man was taken into custody in northwest Georgia after he allegedly traveled to Illinois to have sex with a 14-year-old girl, The Daily Herald reports. This stems for an Aug. 3 investigation in Huntley, Ill., when the girl's parents reported her missing.
Ervin Betancourt, 18, had been corresponding with the girl via the Internet for four months before he decided to visit her at her Illinois home, the paper stated.
Betancourt, who lives in Florida, had planned to take the girl back to his Miami residence, but was caught after police interviews with the girl’s friends, the Herald continued.
The investigation led police to Dalton, where Betancourt and the girl were found on a bus and taken into police custody.
Betancourt is charged with grooming, using the Internet to seduce a minor into having sex and criminal sexual abuse, the paper stated. He was released from jail on a $1,500 bond.
Betancourt is due back in court Aug. 16, the Herald reports. The girl is back with her parents.
