The Monday night wreck that killed a taxi driver in College Park was the apparent result of a road-rage incident involving a woman in a sport-utility vehicle, police said.
Karl Green, 30, of Morrow was killed when his cab ran off the ramp from I-85 to Riverdale Road and struck a tree, police said. The taxi, a Ford sedan, was carrying no passengers when it crashed about 10 p.m.
Police found Green trapped in his cab. The man was pronounced dead a short time later.
"It appears it may have been a case of road rage that got out of hand," Sgt. Cameron Burke, traffic division supervisor for the College Park Police Department, told the AJC in a phone interview Tuesday afternoon.
"One of them was chasing the other," Burke said. "We're not exactly sure why or how ... who did what to whom, or what started all of this."
Earlier Tuesday, College Park Police Chief Ron Fears told Channel 2 Action News that Green and the unidentified woman could be seen on surveillance video having a conversation at an Exxon gas station shortly before the events leading to Green's death.
After leaving the gas station, Green's taxi rear-ended the woman's Mercedes on Old National Highway. One ended up chasing the other onto I-85 before the fatal crash.
Burke said the woman complained of neck and back injuries from the rear-end collision and was taken as a precaution to Atlanta Medical Center. She was released from the hospital Tuesday.
"Apparently, they do know each other in some form or fashion, but we haven't determined exactly how," Burke said. "We are conducting interviews with other witnesses at the scene and will be conducting an interview with the female driver."
Green had worked for Day & Night Cab Co. for six months, Channel 2 reported.
"I'm in shock," fellow cab driver Dameon DeClue told Channel 2. "He's a young cab driver, I'm a young cab driver. It's very shocking to see something like this happen."
