Piedmont Road will be closed part of two days in June between Canton Road and Morgan Road in Marietta.

Beginning at 5 a.m. June 8 to around noon June 9, the railroad crossing just east of Piedmont Drive will be closed for repair work, depending on the weather, according to a Cobb County statement.

Electronic closure warning signs will be installed on each side of the railroad to announce the pending closure along with detour signs.

Alternate routes will include Ebenezer/Blackwell Roads to the north and Morgan/Liberty Hill Roads to the south.

Staff from Patriot Rail, formally known as Georgia Northeastern Railroad (GNRR), will remove the existing tracks across Piedmont Road and replace them with new ballast, ties and rails, including precast concrete crossing panels instead of the existing rubber crossing pads.

GNRR operates more than 100 miles of track from the town of Elizabeth - just north of downtown Marietta - to the city of McCaysville.

Goods hauled are mostly timber, grain, poultry and marble products.

Once that railway work is complete, a Cobb Department of Transportation contractor will add asphalt on each side before the road can be reopened to traffic.

Between June 9 and June 30, the contractor will add curb, gutter, sidewalk and drainage structures, using temporary lane closures to complete the project.

Funding for this project is part of the voter-approved 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
