Piedmont Henry Hospital has started a lung cancer screening program to improve early detection of the disease, which is the second leading cause of death behind heart disease. Patients who meet certain criteria and are deemed “high risk” for lung cancer will be able to participate in the new program which uses a low-dose computed tomography screening to detect the disease. High risk people are those over 65 who have smoked about a pack of cigarettes a day for more than 30 years, those who’ve smoked two packs a day for 15 years and those who’ve smoked three packs a day for 10 years or more.
