PETA is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for shooting a dog seven times and leaving her in a dumpster in southwest Atlanta, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The three-year-old dog, whom the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia named "Catie," was left in a dumpster in the 500 block of Beckwith Street, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported earlier this month. Police found her on March 7 with a shattered spine and neck, shrapnel in her heart and damaged lungs, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a press release.

Because veterinarians said her injuries were “too severe” for her to survive, the dog was euthanized, PETA said. Police have yet to make any arrests in the case, and no collars or tags were found on the animal.

“Whoever is responsible for violently attacking Catie and leaving her in unimaginable pain must be found, for everyone’s sake,” PETA Director Martin Mersereau said in the release. “People who hurt animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious risk to all animals — including humans — so PETA urges anyone with any information to come forward now, before Catie’s attacker claims another victim.”

The Society of Humane Friends had raised more than $6,000 for Catie on the fundraising site YouCaring.com before sharing an update on March 12 stating that Catie’s injuries were “much, much worse than we originally knew.”

“As much as we want Catie to live, it’s not fair to ask her to suffer every day for the rest of her life,” the Society of Humane Friends wrote in the post.
