A pedestrian struck and killed early Monday on the I-75/85 split south of downtown Atlanta in the second fatal pedestrian accident in four hours in metro Atlanta, police said.
Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said the preliminary investigation indicates the man was standing in the roadway on the Downtown Connector southbound near Langford Parkway about 1:30 a.m., wearing dark clothing and facing traffic, when he was hit by a BMW 735i.
The impact threw the man into traffic, where he was struck by other vehicles.
The man’s name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.
The BMW driver, who remained at the scene, told police he tried to avoid hitting the man, but was unable to do so.
The southbound lanes of I-75/85 were shut down while police investigated the incident, but had reopened by the start of the Monday morning rush hour.
That incident was the second fatal pedestrian accident overnight in metro Atlanta.
Just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a man was hit by a car at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Pinehill Drive, Smyrna police spokesman Louis Defense said.
The man, identified as Ryan Holt of Smyrna, was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he later died.
That accident remains under investigation, Defense said.
