Peachtree City is formally opposing the idea of building a new J.C. Booth Middle School on property off Carriage Lane and Stagecoach Road on its eastern border.

On behalf of herself and the City Council, Mayor Vanessa Fleisch told a Sept. 25 meeting of the Fayette County Board of Education that the plan “will place an undue burden on the transportation network in the immediate vicinity,” and that the city has no funds budgeted to make millions of dollars of necessary road improvements. The Board of Education bought the property last November but has not yet done a comprehensive traffic study for the site. The board recently held two public meetings to solicit input about the merits of either renovating the current Booth building on Peachtree Parkway or building a larger school on the new property.

Local reaction has been mixed; some parents want the new school to relieve overcrowding, while others have expressed concerns about its impact on traffic and adjacent residential areas.
