Car burglars in Peachtree City are using – what else? – stolen golf carts as getaway vehicles, police tell Channel 2 Action News.

Peachtree City police are investigating reports filed Sunday through Tuesday of 12 vehicle burglaries, one garage break-in – all of the victims left the doors unlocked – and two stolen golf carts, one used to get to the scene of the crime, and the other to get away.

“Because of the sense of security people feel in Peachtree City, you see a lot of unlocked cars, and so we always plead with the citizens the best way to prevent this kind of thing is to simply lock your car,” police Capt. Steve Pye told Channel 2.

Most of the break-ins occurred in the Cedar Croft area and in the North Fairfield subdivision off Ga. 74. The thieves took electronics, cash, a purse and even a handgun.

Police suspect teens were responsible.

"When you have that many miles of golf cart paths and that many golf carts, it makes it very easy for them to go unnoticed going from location to location,” Pye said.

Peachtree City has 90 miles of paths designated for an estimated 12,000 carts.

Residents say they’ve learned their lesson.

"You feel invaded that someones been going through your things,” vehicle burglary victim Kim Katz-Leroux said. “Now that we’ve had break-ins ourselves, we’ve kept (vehicles) locked.”
