Peachtree City plans to hire two additional police officers and one more firefighter/EMT to maintain staffing levels while several officers are serving military deployments. The City Council approved the measure 5-0 on May 17.

According to Human Resources Director Ellece Brown, three of the city’s 65 police officers are currently on extended military leave; one of the 64 firefighter positions has been open for approximately five years because of deployment. The absences plus normal attrition have resulted in the city operating below approved personnel levels “for many years.” City Manager Jon Rorie said the hiring of new officers is not expected to affect the city’s overall budget.

Per federal law, the jobs of the officers and firefighters on deployment will remain available upon their return.
