The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved on Dec. 16 a $572,687 contract with Bartow Paving Company, Inc. to expand the parking lot at the Mountain View Community Center.

Funding will come from the 2016 PARKS Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) Program for the facility at 3400 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta.

PARKS Director Jimmy Gisi said more event parking is needed at the center that was renovated 16 months ago.

Parking had been available in the parking lot in the adjacent Mountain View Elementary School.

However, the school property has been sold and a new commercial development has taken its place without the opportunity to share parking, Gisi said.

Now the center only has 10 parking spaces to serve a wide variety of events such as community meetings, family reunions and wedding receptions.

For the center to continue to serve the public, Gisi said the parking lot must be expanded onto county-owned property to meet federal, state and local accessibility standards and development regulations.
