Parents of children affected by Gwinnett school redistricting plans for next fall can now see detailed maps of the proposal.
In a report presented to school board members this week, the revised district maps detail shifts in student population affecting some 9,000 children. The action is being taken to relieve overcrowding in the state's largest school district, which has more than 160,000 students.
Thousands of students and staff at 29 schools will relocate as the district cuts back on trailers and draws boundaries for six new schools.
School administrators are encouraging parents of students affected in the redistricting to fill out opinion forms on the district web site, www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us. Those with objections can present their own ideas to help relieve overcrowding. Copies of the redrawn district maps are available online.
Forms are also available at the schools. The deadline to respond is Nov. 4.
The redistricting plan relocates some students to different clusters.
Some elementary students attending Minor, Corley, Kanoheda and Benefield in the Berkmar cluster will attend the new Ferguson Elementary, just north of Pleasant Hill Road in the Meadowcreek cluster. Likewise, some elementary students at Norton in the South cluster will be relocated to the new Snell Elementary near Centerville Highway in the Shiloh cluster.
Most students, though, will remain close to home and continue on to the same middle and high schools they had expected to attend.
The Board of Education will review the parents' opinion forms before a Nov. 19 public hearing on the redistricting.
Ferguson is one of five new elementary schools opening in August. The others are Burnette and Roberts elementary schools in Suwanee, Jenkins Elementary in Lawrenceville and Snell Elementary in Snellville. Midway Middle in Loganville will also open in the fall of 2010.
