A Spalding County firefighter allegedly took video images of a fatal car accident that were put on the Internet and eventually made it back to the dead woman’s family.

Dayna Kempson-Schacht, 23, was killed in a single-car accident on July 17 when her car crashed into trees along Georgia Highway 19-41 as it bypasses downtown Griffin.

More than two months later, on Sept. 29, her father, Jeffry Kempson, received a copy of that graphic video, recorded on a cell phone.

“Just to lose her was traumatic in itself,” Kempson told the AJC on Monday. “She had severe head trauma. It made the video all the more grotesque.”

The cell phone also recorded the conversations between the first responders, including the exclamation of horror at what they saw when they got to the car driven by the mother of two sons, 3 and 5 years old.

Kempson declined to name the firefighter who made the recording on his personal cell phone.

Kempson said that firefighter shared the recording with others. A second firefighter, whose name is not known, took the video to a bar and texted it to others and that’s how it spread.

Spalding County Fire Chief Kenneth West did not respond immediately to a message left on the department’s voice mail.

Kempson said he filed a complaint with the Spalding County Fire Department once he determined which of the five responding agencies employed the responder.

“Things were getting better,” Kempson said. “We were getting back into the routine, getting back to work.

“I can’t tell you how it traumatized not just myself but my wife,” Kempson said.
