Decatur is holding a public input session with the two artists painting the MARTA overpass mural at West Trinity Place and Atlanta Avenue, 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ebster Recreation Center, 105 Electric Avenue.
Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre were selected from 28 finalists. According to their website they have a long history of assimilating public collaboration into their work which they describe as an “intuitive way of working [that] combines the context of a space and its history with color and intricate patterns.”
Their mural will cover both sides and the support beams of an overpass spanning a district that for much of the 20th century was a thriving African American business/residential district.
After a final public engagement session in August the pair will likely begin painting in late August/early September with a dedication slated for late October.
This is Decatur’s first public art project since the community mural on one side of the Oakhurst Market, painted over 20 years ago and scheduled for a restoration later this year.
