The Hampton City Council voted at its Dec. 10 regular meeting to approved the first reading of an ordinance that would amend smoking regulations in the city.

The new section, which would take effect after the second reading is approved at a future meeting, would make smoking “prohibited in all public places in the city including parks and any real property owned or controlled by the city.” The council also approved a resolution for an $88,000 contract to run fiber optic wiring from City Hall to a separate city-owned building that houses the Public Works Department.

Other resolutions passed by the council included approval of the investment of city funds to the local government investment pool and adoption of a new fee schedule for a wide variety of city services.
