The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District will hold an open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for the proposed Sweetwater Creek Flood Risk Management Study. The open house will be held at the Cobb County Water System Laboratory Training Room, 662 South Cobb Drive, Marietta.

Members of the Mobile District project team and representatives from the local sponsor, Cobb County, will be on hand with graphical displays to explain the ongoing study being conducted by the Mobile District staff and to answer questions about the study.

In the last 10 years, Sweetwater Creek has crested 10 feet above the channel bottom (the lowest flood stage) six times. In September 2009, an estimated 10 to 20 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours, resulting in the loss of 10 lives, historic flash flooding and a new flood record for the area. In addition, the flooding caused more than $500 million in property damage.

More than 20,000 homes, businesses and other buildings sustained major damage.
