An unidentified man was shot dead Tuesday night at a Smyrna apartment complex, police say.

Police spokesman Louis Defense said the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kennestone Hospital. He had gotten into an argument with another man at Smyrna Commons apartments in the 2500 block of Ward Street around 8:30 p.m. and was shot several times.

Smyrna police Det. Mitch Plumb told Channel 2 Action News that the argument began in the parking lot, and the two men ran into the bedroom of a downstairs unit.

The shooting happened in front of a woman and a 3-year-old child who were inside the bedroom.

Police say they believe the shooter was injured during the altercation and have alerted local hospitals to be on the lookout.
