The $2 million reconstruction of Oakhurst’s business district in South Decatur has hit roughly the midway point, and should finish in November, according to Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon. The centerpiece of the project is rebuilding and expanding by 25 percent Harmony Park, which includes planting a number of trees, adding picnic tables, green space and streetlights. The original reconstruction of Oakhurst’s streetscapes in 1981 was one of Saxon’s first projects after getting hired by the city. Before then, five streets converged — similar to Little Five Points — into one intersection. The leftover space in the middle was eventually converted into Harmony Park in the late 1990s.
