Gwinnett Commissioners approved an agreement Tuesday for the Georgia Department of Corrections to increase the number of state inmates from 128 to 158 at the Gwinnett County Comprehensive Correctional Complex. The county’s correctional facility at 750 Hi-Hope Road in Lawrenceville has housed state inmates for more than 50 years. In exchange, the county receives $20 per diem for each state inmate housed and benefits from the inmates’ labor. The new agreement from Sept. 1 through June 30 will result in increased revenue of approximately $182,200.
The 800-bed facility houses medium and minimum-security inmates sentenced to full-time incarceration. These inmates are assigned to supervised work crews that perform most janitorial and landscaping services at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center and maintain the landscaping along Ronald Reagan Parkway. They perform similar tasks at other county-owned buildings, roadways, and parks.
