The Norcross City Council voted recently to approve the replacement of 77 high-pressure sodium light pole heads with new induction heads. This will complete replacements in the city center area and city parks and will provide a consistency of lighting in these high-profile areas.
Induction lights have been installed in other areas in the city and are considered to be an energy-efficient lighting system with a longer life span, potentially 100,000 hours. They are considered to be maintenance-free and high efficiency.
Norcross Power reports they have never had to replace the induction lights currently in place, saving the city material, labor and equipment costs. The preliminary cost for 77 induction heads is $98,945 for materials and $6,160 for labor for a total of $105,105. A 5 percent contingency was added to the total project cost not to exceed $110, 360. The final cost will depend on recommendations to remove several decorative poles, adding one pole in Thrasher Park, and converting from 120 volts to 240 volts where necessary.
