Thanks to a statewide law that went into effect July 1, Fayette County has begun approving homestead exemption refunds for disabled veterans who were previously denied them.
County Attorney Dennis Davenport presented information about passage of House Bill 196 to the Board of Commissioners on July 13, noting that Fayette’s legislative delegation had urged the General Assembly to change the policy because refunds had not been retroactive to the date the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs issued a certification of disability.
The commission subsequently voted 4-0-1 to grant $10,918 in tax refunds to three disabled veterans who reapplied under the new rules.
