One of the largest youth triathlon events in the country is coming to Alpharetta.

Hundreds of children from around the country will compete in this year's IronKids Alpharetta. The multi-sport event will take place on Sept. 18 at Wills Park located on Old Milton Parkway.

Children ages 6 to 15 are scheduled to compete in rigorous swimming, biking and running events. The overall race is divided into three categories: junior (ages 6–8), intermediate (ages 9 to 11) and senior (ages 12 to 15).

This is the 15th year that Alpharetta has hosted the youth triathlon, said Bill Burke, president of Premier Event Management, an endurance and multi-sport race production company based in Harahan, La. The bustling city is a chief location for the race, he said, adding there are no shortage of parents who want to keep their kids active.

“Kids line up to this event ever year because there’s very few like it (in the South),” Burke said.

Close to 800 school-age athletes from 18 states participated in IronKids Alpharetta last year. Race registration is now close to 700 children and is expected to reach 900 children, he said.

“It’s all about youth fitness, and giving (children) another alternative to just running,” Burke said.

The race begins at 7:15 a.m. An awards ceremony follows at 11 a.m.
