Hundreds of mourners gathered Thursday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Dunwoody to celebrate the life and mourn the tragic death of 17-year-old Carter Davis.

Carter and another teenager, Natalie Henderson of Roswell, were found dead beside a car in a parking lot behind a Publix in Roswell in the early hours of Monday morning. Both were shot in the head.

Carter’s body was discovered on what was supposed to be the first day of his senior year at River Ridge High School in Woodstock, where he was an honor student and athlete.

Carter’s funeral was held at 11 a.m. at St. Martin’s, the church and private school where his mother taught eighth-grade English. The church was overflowing as nearly 350 mourners gathered to say their final goodbyes. Carter’s teammates — most wearing their jerseys — were among the mourners.

St. Martin’s Headmaster Rev. Dr. James Hammer delivered a statement on behalf of the family.

“His smile was a warm hug that embraced the room,” Hammer read. “Although his life was cut short, everyone in his life will remember how he loved the Lord, loved everyone and told them often.”

A vigil for Natalie is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday on the Roswell Square. Her funeral is Friday morning.
