A Cobb County woman charged in the traffic death of her 4-year-old son postponed a meeting Friday with the Georgia Department of Transportation to discuss road safety.
Raquel Nelson, who was granted a new trial in the case, was to present the department with 158,000 signatures from a campaign demanding street safety improvements. The meeting was canceled due to a “family emergency,” a representative for Nelson said in a news release.
In April 2010, Nelson was attempting to cross Austell Road with her family outside of a crosswalk when the accident occurred. She faced up to 36 months in prison for conviction on a vehicular homicide charge. In July, she was sentenced to a year of probation and given the option of a new trial. She accepted and the trial is slated for October.
