A minivan struck and critically injured a 6-year-old boy in east Cobb County on Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident happened about 8:20 a.m. when the child, who was walking with his mother and a dog, tried to Cross Casteel Road near Sumter Lake Drive, Channel 2 Action News reported. The minivan was heading westbound.

The boy was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with head trauma, Cobb police spokesman Dana Pierce said.

The van’s driver, who remained on the scene, is not expected to be charged because the child stepped into the intersection, Pierce said.
