The Milton City Council has authorized a pre-application for a $200,000 state grant for Providence Park.

The grant would be sought from the Recreation Trails Program of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, according to a memo to the council from Parks and Recreation Director Jim Cregge. It will require a 20 percent local match out of the city’s parks and trails expansion capital budget,

Milton is proposing a boardwalk one-third of a mile in length through marshland near a lake, according to the grant application. “The proposed trail project is a section of trail within the Providence Park trail system and is a component of a wider connected trail system planned for the city of Milton,” the application says.

A master plan for the 42-acre park calls for restrooms, bike racks, benches, signage and information kiosks, the application says. Other proposed park elements include a fishing dock, rock climbing, zip lines, campsites, a performing arts area and a nature center.

Providence Park is a former Fulton County park that was closed for 12 years until Milton acquired it, cleaned it up and reopened it in November 2016. The property is off Providence Road east of unincorporated Crabapple.
