Milton is reversing its decision to let residents prepay their property taxes and will return all payments made, city officials announced.

Milton previously had said that in response to citizen inquiries about the $10,000 property tax deduction limit of the federal 2017 Tax Reform Bill, it would give residents the option to make prepayments at City Hall during the final week of 2017.

“The IRS … issued an advisory yesterday (Dec. 27), which appears to have definitively resolved the matter in the negative,” the city said in a prepared statement. “As such, the city of Milton will no longer accept voluntary overpayments, and any such payments will be immediately returned or canceled.”

The initial decision had been made in the absence of guidance from the IRS and after consultation with the city attorney, officials said. The Milton Finance Department will process all refunds by the end of the business day, Dec. 29.

City officials referred residents to IRS Advisory, IR-2017-210, which can be accessed at: http://bit.ly/2DoTUkG
