A Milton High School student’s poetic and artistic talents are taking her to the White House next week.
Maya Eashwaran, 17, will travel to Washington, D.C., for a reception at the White House on Sept. 8. First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to welcome Eashwaran and other members of the 2016 National Student Poets Program during the reception.
Eashwaran, an Alpharetta native, is one of five high school students honored this year by the National Student Poets Program. The Milton High junior represents the Southeast region.
Eashwaran’s National Student Poets Program webpage states she writes a lot about “foreigners and the foreigner mentality, often incorporating personal experiences dealing with assimilation in the modern age.” She enjoys watercolors, calligraphy and literature by Walt Whitman.
