The city of Milton has put the brakes on accepting new permit applications authorizing the use of for community sewerage disposal systems.

Council members voted 5-2 Monday night for an emergency 30-day moratorium that blocks the process of authorizing the use of such systems, with two council members questioning the need for the measure.

Community Development Department officials said hitting the pause button would allow examination of language in the city’s ordinance (left over from Fulton County control before the city incorporated) allowing for such systems. With the language not as clear as it should be, the moratorium will allow the council to begin considering whether to revise the language to allow for future system installations, or ban them.

City attorney Ken Jarrard said 30 days would give the city time to hold a public hearing on whether a longer ban should be enacted. The city said that applications already in process won’t be affected.
