A Chatham County public official with more than 30 years’ experience in local government has been named the new Milton public works director.
Robert Drewry’s first day on the new job was Monday, according to a city announcement. He previously headed Chatham public works since 2000, managing an annual budget of more than $16.5 million and 127 full-time and 7 part-time employees. Chatham’s largest city is Savannah.
Drewry succeeds Carter Lucas, who left Milton in February. Drewry will oversee a department with a $2.6 million total budget, eight full-time staff members and numerous contractors and vendors, the city said.
A South Georgia native, Drewry began his career as assistant county engineer in Lowndes County before joining Chatham as a civil engineer. He has a degree in civil engineering technology from Georgia Southern University and a certificate of public works management from the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute of Government.
Drewry also is a past president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Public Works Association.
He coordinated debris management during Chatham’s recovery from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Also that year, he received an Innovation Award from Georgia APWA for the creation of the Chatham County Connect mobile app.
