Two metro Atlanta teachers are among the 10 finalists for the 2013 Georgia teacher of the year. The winner will be announced June 1 and will travel the state and nation, serving as an ambassador for the teaching profession. He or she also will be entered in the National Teacher of the Year competition. Metro Atlanta finalists are: Elisha R. Gray, a Severe Intellectual Disabilities teacher at Maynard Holbrook Jackson High in Atlanta; and Shelby Ann Steinhauer, a French teacher at Milton High in Fulton County. The 10 finalists were chosen from 150 district teachers of the year.

The other eight finalists, their subject, school system and school are: Charles Trader, Mathematics Camden County, Saint Marys Middle; Jaslyn Dukes, Reading, Douglas County, J.W. Stewart Middle; Alana Ellenburg, High School 101 & First Aid/Safety, Floyd County, Pepperell High; Sara Taylor, Pre-K Self-contained Special Education, Liberty County, Liberty County Pre-K Center; Dr. Andy Felt, Journalism, Chemistry & Physical Science, Madison County, Madison County High; Allison Konter, AP United States Government & Politics, Government, Psychology and Sociology, Savannah-Chatham, Islands High; Lauren Eckman, English Language Arts, State School, Georgia Academy for the Blind; Billie Jo Diehl, Social Studies and Social Skills, White County, White County Intermediate School.
