DeKalb County's new school superintendent, Cheryl L. H. Atkinson, will be sworn into her new post at a ceremony at 9 a.m. Thursday at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Decatur. Superior Court Judge Gregory Adams will officiate. After a private reception with her family, Atkinson will begin her first day over Georgia's third largest school system with a tour of four schools, starting at 11 a.m. She plans to visit Clifton and Eldridge Miller elementary schools, Columbia Middle School, Salem Middle School, Redan High School, McNair High School. The Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale County Health Departments are now offering flu shots at their health centers in Buford, Lawrenceville, Norcross, Conyers and Covington to everyone six months and older. Both the nasal and injectable forms of the vaccine are available. The cost is $25. The health department also recommends pneumonia shots for persons over 65 years old or anyone with a chronic illness or weakened immune system. CARRIE TEEGARDIN

Youth Service America and State Farm are now accepting applications for Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants.
YSA, a global organization that improves communities by increasing the number and diversity of young people serving in substantive roles, and State Farm will award 125 $1,000 grants to deserving public schools across the country.
