President Barack Obama late Tuesday nominated U.S. District Judge Adalberto José Jordán to the federal appeals court in Atlanta.
Jordán, 49, was born in Havana, Cuba, and came to the U.S. with his parents when he was 6 years old. Before President Bill Clinton nominated him to the federal bench in Miami in 1999, Jordán clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and served as a federal prosecutor. If confirmed by the Senate, he would succeed Judge Susan Black, who took senior status.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is allotted 12 judges and has two vacancies. Obama has yet to fill the Georgia seat of Stanley Birch, who retired from the court a year ago. BILL RANKIN
