The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has found that Hertz Corp. and Stryden Inc. discriminated against East African immigrant and African-American employees in Atlanta based on their race, religion and national origin.

The employees contend the discrimination occurred when they were fired in 2009, the same time Hertz outsourced its work to Stryden at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Hertz and Styden deny the allegations, and Hertz says it outsourced its work for economic reasons devoid of discriminatory intent, EEOC documents say. BILL RANKIN

Federal authorities have filed suit against a California company, Billion International Trading Inc., on allegations it sought to illegally import more than 20,000 counterfeit Atlanta Braves caps.

U.S. Attorney Sally Yates said Billion International tried to import the caps with the distinctive Braves "A" after buying them from a Chinese company, Yangzhou Yingmei Caps Factory Co. In December 2008, customs officials seized the hats, which had an estimated retail value of $645,000, at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, authorities said. BILL RANKIN

When Georgia Tech's 2,575 freshmen start fall semester Monday they will represent the institution's most diverse class, officials said Thursday.

The class includes more Latino and African-American students and 1,039 women. That's a record for female freshmen and represents an 8 percent increase from three years ago.

University of Georgia and Georgia State University also set diversity records with their freshmen classes. The trend reflects targeted recruiting efforts and increased diversity among Georgia's high school students. LAURA DIAMOND
