A more than 30-year health care industry veteran, Kerry Kohnen will serve as Kaiser Permanente of Georgia’s new president.
Kohnen has been with Kaiser for 35-plus years, recently serving as senior vice president of operations for Kaiser Permanente of Georgia.
Kaiser, the largest nonprofit health plan in Georgia, has more than 240,000 members with 28 medical facilities and affiliated hospitals in a 28-county metro Atlanta service area. MISTY WILLIAMS

Researchers from the University of Georgia received a $1.3 million grant to examine ways pine forests could be use to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
The award is part of a larger series of grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to look at how pine trees could be a solution to this global issue. A consortium of 11 universities is working on different parts of the research.
The UGA research team is looking for new ways to manage pine forests so that they could decrease greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. LAURA DIAMOND

A special legislative sub-committee will meet next month to discuss how to help public school students attending campuses approved by the Georgia Charter Schools Commission, which was recently overturned by the state Supreme Court.
The Education and Youth Special Sub-Committee will meet at 10 a.m. on June 3 to discuss the recent ruling .
Sen. Fran Millar, R-Dunwoody, chairman of the Senate Committee on Education and Youth, said the group will examine short and long-term solutions to help commission charter school students. The committee also will work with the state Department of Education to make sure students find settings that meet their educational needs by the start of the new school year. D. AILEEN DODD
