Chuck Burbridge, chief financial officer for Atlanta Public Schools, won the 2011 Bill Wise Award from the Council of the Great City Schools. The recognition is given out annually to a school business official who demonstrates outstanding service for urban education. Burbridge has been APS's financial chief since 2007, formerly serving in Los Angeles and Chicago school districts. He also worked as chief economist for the Illinois Economic and Fiscal Commission. Metro Atlanta is among the top 10 smoggiest regions in the country – logging 23 smog days in 2010, according to a study released this week by advocacy group Environment Georgia.
Atlanta tied with Sacramento and St. Louis at No. 10 on a list of the top smoggiest areas nationwide. The Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif. area topped the list with 110 smog days in 2010. So far this year, metro Atlanta has been among the top five smoggiest areas through Aug. 21, with 34 smog days. JAIME SARRIO

Right on Crime, a group supported by conservative leaders, has launched an effort to educate Georgia policymakers on reforms that are aimed at containing state prison costs that total more than $1 billion a year.
The group said it will give lawmakers the information and tools necessary to reform Georgia's costly criminal justice system. Right on Crime's principles have been endorsed by Jeb Bush, Newt Gingrich, Ed Meese, Bill Bennett and Ralph Reed. The group said it help policymakers adopt reforms like those already in place in Texas. BILL RANKIN
