The federal government has awarded Georgia a nearly $5 million bonus payment for making sure more low-income children have health coverage.
Georgia is among 23 states, including Alabama and South Carolina, to receive more than $296 million in bonus payments under the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), established in 2009. This is Georgia’s first time receiving the payment. States must surpass certain Medicaid enrollment targets, as well as improve access to CHIP, which is called PeachCare for Kids in Georgia.

A dozen people were injured late Thursday morning when a prisoner transport bus overturned on I-16 in middle Georgia. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. near Mile Marker 30 in Twiggs County southeast of Macon.
Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright told the AJC that the state Department of Corrections bus was eastbound on I-16 "when a passenger car cut in front of the bus, causing the driver to take evasive action."
He said the bus rolled over onto its side, coming to rest off the right side of the roadway.
"There were 11 prisoners on the bus and they, along with the assistant transport officer on the bus, have been transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia to be checked," Wright said. "The injuries are not life-threatening."
Wright said the bus driver was not injured.
