A federal appeals court in Atlanta on Thursday denied Georgia’s request to delay legal arguments over the state’s new immigration law pending a U.S. Supreme Court decision on a similar measure in Arizona.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals issued its denial in a one-page order Thursday without explanation. That court is expected to hear oral arguments in the case some time between Feb. 28 and March 2.

Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens(cq) asked the court for the delay last week, just three days after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider a lower court's decision to block several portions of Arizona's law. The higher court will be ruling on issues similar to ones at play before the appeals court in Atlanta. JEREMY REDMON

The Fulton commission approved a tentative $598.2 million budget for 2012 that would spend $3.9 million on one-time raises for select employees. Workers in non-supervisory positions earning $59,452 or less would each get an extra $1,200 next year after taxes, spread out over 12 months.

The $3.9 million figure came from commissioners Emma Darnell and Bill Edwards, who wanted to reallocate money withheld from Grady Memorial Hospital. The commission voted to pay that money to Grady, then told the county manager to find that same amount for the raises, which will go away in 2013. JOHNNY EDWARDS

The case of a Braselton teen accused of killing her mother was resolved last week in Gwinnett County juvenile court, her attorney said Thursday.

The 15-year-old told police she shot her mother, Army 1st Sgt. Karen Moore,  at home April 6 before leaving to pick up a boyfriend she was forbidden to see.

District Attorney Danny Porter transferred the case to Juvenile Court after consulting with family and reviewing psychiatric records. Defense attorney Lucas Harsh, assisted by co-counsel James B. McGinnis, said minors over 13 can be prosecuted for murder as adults, or prosecuted in Juvenile Court if there is a chance for rehabilitation. ANDRIA SIMMONS
