Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center, Georgia’s leading provider of in-school arts-in-education programming, has won an award from the Georgia Art Education Association (GAEA). Young Audiences received the Georgia Art Education Association Distinguished Service Outside the Profession Award for 2012 at the association's annual convention Friday in Marietta. This award was specifically for Young Audiences' Arts for Learning Lessons program, a national, research-based, arts and literacy program that will serve about 1,000 students this year and is a professional learning model for educators. Lung cancer survivors and advocates will raise awareness and support to fight the disease at the 4th Annual Free to Breathe 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk in Athens on Nov. 12.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal recently signed a proclamation declaring November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Georgia. The event will be held at Sandy Creek Park, 400 Bob Holman Road in Athens. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

Some 36,000 folding canes will be given free of charge to U.S. military veterans in honor of Veterans Day at Sam’s Club stores across the country.
The canes will be handed out from Nov. 9 through Nov. 11, as part of the Hugo Salutes Our Veterans national program launched by Alpharetta-based AMG Medical Inc. in 2007.
