Fulton District Attorney Paul Howard is asking the commission to dig him out of a $1.08 million budget shortfall. About half of that can be recouped through attrition, Howard said in a letter, but to make up the rest he'll either have to lay off 12 staffers, decimating his trial division, or force employees to take 11 furlough days.
Furloughs have contributed to his attrition rate leaping from 14 percent to 36 percent, he said. "Please consider placing an additional $579,950 in our budget so that neither untenable option has to be made," the letter said. JOHNNY EDWARDS

The forums run from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.: on April 14 at Suwanee City Hall, and on April 19 at the Mansour Center in Marietta. The Atlanta Regional Commission is also holding a 24-hour online public meeting. ARIEL HART

Two Georgia teachers were recently honored with $25,000 after being named among national winners of the 2011 Milken Educator Awards.
The educators, Kelly Stopp, a reading specialist at Meadowcreek Elementary of Norcross and Rachel Willis, a teacher at Morningside Elementary of Atlanta, were recognized for their success in the classroom during a ceremony at the Milken Educator Forum in Santa Montica, Calif.
The Milken Award is hailed by educators as the “Oscars of teaching.” Since the first award was presented in 1987, approximately 2,500 educators have received more than $62 million in unrestricted cash through the prize. D. AILEEN DODD
