The Obama administration called on governors to improve college completion rates Tuesday by providing competitive grants and seven steps for states to consider.

In 2009, 35 percent or 484,701 of Georgia's adults 25-34 were college graduates. The federal government said at least 785,000 or 53 percent of Georgia's young adults should have college degrees by 2020 so the U.S. can retake the lead in college completion rates.

The State Board of Regents recently required all University System of Georgia presidents to develop plans to improve graduation rates. The regents are researching ways to tie success to the money campuses and college presidents receive.  LAURA DIAMOND
