Georgia Tech researchers will try to improve Internet transparency through a $1 million award from Google.

Researchers will develop tools that can be accessed for free to determine if governments are tampering with what users read or send. Studies show about 60 countries censor access.

Should the Internet go down in a particular country, people would know if a government or other group is blocking traffic, tampering with search results or altering information to spread propaganda, said Wenke Lee, a computer science professor working on the project. LAURA DIAMOND

A new fitness program aimed at curbing Georgia’s growing childhood obesity problem will educate 20,000-plus students on healthy fitness and eating habits.

Nonprofit HealthMPowers and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia Foundation are partnering with 41 Georgia schools to provide lesson plans, exercise DVDs, fitness equipment and a tracking system for students.

Georgia’s childhood obesity rate of 21.3 percent is the second highest in the country, a report by the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows.
