Cameron "Cam" Newton, the 2010 Heisman winner and a south Fulton resident will be honored at a "welcome home" celebration on Saturday. The event, hosted by Fulton County commissioner Bill Edwards and the rest of the commission, will be at the Southwest Arts Center Performance Theater, 915 New Hope Road, at 10 a.m.

Newton is a graduate of Fulton's Westlake High School, was quarterback for the Auburn University football team, winner of the 2010 Southeastern Conference and NCAA championships. Edwards said the event will celebrate "the many fine accomplishments of this son of south Fulton and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Atlanta school board members will begin in early April to hold one-on-one meetings with professional mediators, as they try to mend internal disputes as cited by the system's accrediting agency. On a related note, members could not agree Wednesday about how to respond to a request by House Democratic Leader Stacey Abrams of Atlanta for a written update on their progress.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools blamed the board entirely when it placed the system on probation in January. The board has met at least once a week since to address SACS' six mandates for improvement, including Wednesday. Regular updates are posted on the city system's website, but Abrams -- who does not typically attend board meetings -- asked for a more direct response. Board Chairman Khaatim Sherrer El said she will get one, despite some members not agreeing on proposed wording or form.
