Decatur’s commission will consider adopting its annexation map on Dec. 15, with several public meetings scheduled over the next six weeks.

City Manager Peggy Merriss believes that by 2018 all DeKalb County north of Memorial Drive will be in either a new or existing city.

During a recent interview Merriss added, “That’s why [Decatur’s current consideration of annexation] is so important with huge long-term repercussions. Because whatever’s [decided in the near future], the map isn’t going to change after this.”

Initial projections for Decatur’s tentative annexation map show the city increasing its population by 7,310 (currently 19,000), including 380 school-aged children, and adding 1.5 square miles to its current 4.2.
