The inaugural group of students attending the new Medical College of Georgia/University of Georgia Medical Partnership campus in Athens had their first classes Monday.
The 40 students -- about half of which are UGA graduates -- are the result of a unique partnership between the state's only public medical college and Georgia's largest public university. Leaders at both institutions said working together was the most expedient and economical way to increase the state's medical education options.
Georgia has long had a need for more doctors -- the state ranks 40th in the number of physicians per capita nationwide, according to the American Medical Association.
The Athens campus will increase to about 60 students in each class. The Medical College will soon have a new facility in Augusta that will allow each class there to increase to 240 students. By 2017, there will be about 300 students in each class between the two locations.
