The pets belonging to an Oglethorpe County couple mauled by feral canines last weekend have been put up for adoption.

Lothar and Sherry Schweder’s seven dogs were transported Wednesday to the Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter in Danielsville. The couple had 20 cats as well, and those that can be captured will be taken to the Athens Area Humane Society.

The mixed-breed dogs range in age from 4 to 11 years old, said Susan Fornash, director of the Danielsville shelter.

“They’ve been through a lot,” she said. “We’re just getting them settled in here.”

Matching them with a new owner could present a challenge.

“Since the recession we’ve seen an increase in surrenders and a decrease in adoptions,” Fornash said. “We took in over 600 animals in the last two months alone.”

The 14 mongrel dogs that killed the Schweders were euthanized earlier in the week.
